One of the best 3 episode dvd's of the series March 22, 2008 I am a huge muppet fan, but even I will admit that the series was uneven. Not all guest stars were particularly good, nor the writing always the best. The three episodes on this DVD, however, were among the much better ones, particularly James Coburn and Debbie Harry (although Stallone was good himself). All 3 guest stars seem genuinely comfortable interacting with the muppets, which is key. The Coburn episode is a classic. He develops a friendship with Animal and tries to teach him to meditate in a particularly hilarious sketch (note Animal looking at his toes in bewilderment for the "energy"). Beware that the Muppet Show is not today's Sesame Street. The episode culminates in a knock down, drag out Asian square dance that would never be allowed in today's ultra-sensitive times (sadly, our nanny governemnt would also not allow Coburn to carry a pipe nor smoke a cigar as he does in the closing sequence). Debbie Harry performs a couple of her well-known songs and even performs a duet with kermit of the beloved Rainbow Connection while helping Robin and the frog scouts to earn their punk merit badges. An excellent sampling of what the Muppet Show was capable of being. My son has loved these episodes since he wsa 4 and continues to be a Debbie Harry fan to this day as a result of this episode.
Coburn's episode easily ranks among the show's best October 4, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's inherently hilarious to even imagine two tough guys like James Coburn and Sylvester Stallone surrounded by a bunch of Muppets, and that is largely what makes these two episodes of the Time-Life series of "The Best of The Muppets" among the best ones around. Specially, the one with Coburn, where he takes Animal (the wild drummer) under his wing to try to get him to relax through a session of Oriental meditation -it's too much!
I used to love the Muppets as I grew up and today I get a chance to see the best of their shows along with my 3-year old and it's still every bit as funny, in spite of the fact that over two decades have passed.
