Product Description David Howard, America's foremost ballet master, leads some of the world's finest young dancers in an intermediate ballet class specially designed to expand the classical vocabulary, movement potential and kinetic awareness of the student. Dancers and teachers alike are given the possibility to participate in this unique class, which features Cynthia Harvey and Peter Fonseca, formerly with the American Ballet Theatre. David Howard, ballet master, teacher and coach was a soloist with the Royal Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. Mr. Howard opened his world famous school on Manhattan's upper west side in 1977. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Regional Ballet, and served as its President from 1976-1979. He has been a guest teacher for New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Joffrey, Boston Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada and the Ballet de Marseilles. David Howard teaches and has coached many of the world's foremost dancers and celebrities including Natalia Makarova, Gelsey Kirkland, Valery and Galina Panov, Patrick Bissell, Cynthia Harvey and many others. Lynn Stanford, ballet's top accompanist, has composed an original score, ideally suited to the needs of the dancer.

Love this! September 5, 2008 I bought this dvd after reading the great reviews about the beginner version. I didn't get the beginner version though because a few reviewers commented on how it was too basic. I am a beginner in ballet, but have done the NYC Ballet workouts for many years and more recently the Element ballet conditioning dvd,and have a taken a few classes in a studio, so I have a little familiarity with ballet movements and didn't want anything too easy so i ordered this dvd and I am glad I did!
DIFFICULTY: It is definitely not a beginner workout tape, but would definitely be appropriate for someone with beginning ballet class experience. I think it would be too easy for advanced students. I got it last week and have done it about 4 times now. It is very good for building up for your experience. You get better and understand it more each time. Also the instructor David Howard does give technique tips, though minimal. You will get very stretched out and it warms up your dance muscles very well. I do this tape before my tap class every day and it gets me limber and ready for class so it's complimentary for other dance styles as well.
VOICING/MUSIC: Traditional piano accompaniment just like in regular ballet class. Good and fun choreography. Not much talking- at the beginning of each section he quickly half demonstrates and explains the routine and then gives minimal technique tips/cueing while you are doing the movements. His voice is quiet *though audible* and not annoying so it is a good tape for doing every day. The mood of the instruction is very pleasant and calming but not cheesy at all (though I did giggle when I first saw the instructor's pink pants).
DVD: This dvd has a chapter selection or play movie option. There is one section near the end that shows how to properly put on pointe shoes ( or "toe shoes" as David Howard calls them) and also (to me) an awkwardly placed stretch section because you do center work right after that. It seems like you should have the strech at the end of the video (even though you do stretch after barre in a real class) simply because the video's majority of the time is spent on barre work. There is only about 10-15 minutes of center work. But alas that is the only gripe I have about the whole video.
I really recommend this tape for people looking for a ballet dvd that mimics a "real" class in a studio. It is the closest one I have found. It is definitely more like a class than a conditioning tape. You stay busy and have to concentrate, but you don't become drenched in sweat like if you were doing tae bo or something. You will definitely see results quickly as well. My flexibility has increased tremendously in a short period of time and I was already pretty flexible before buying this tape.
Highly recommended!!!
