Amazon.com Suzanne Pleshette, who never got the career she deserved, achieved TV success as the skeptical wife on The Bob Newhart Show, but If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium--a 1969 comedy about tourists on a speed tour of Europe--shows off the movie star that Pleshette could have been. The movie sounds like an excuse for a lot of cheap gags, and there are plenty of broad jokes, but they're balanced by sly satirical bits that cut both ways (the vulgar Americans and the cynical Europeans get equally mocked). Even more unexpected are moments of lyricism, cross-cultural generosity, and bittersweetness, such as when a veteran finally re-meets the Italian woman he's been holding a torch for since World War II. These swift but skillful vignettes get fleshed out by a great crew of late-60s character actors and comedians. Holding the episodes together is the ongoing flirtation between Pleshette's no-nonsense Minnesota businesswoman and the wily British tour guide played by Ian McShane (fans of Deadwood will gape in astonishment at his boyish youth). McShane is shamelessly charming, but Pleshette is ravishing, both sensible and drop-dead sexy. The combination sounds improbable, but when she's standing on a balcony, drowsily surveying Rome in the morning light, and wearing nothing but a man's shirt, Pleshette fuses what-the-hell pleasure with the knowledge that, sometimes, things just don't work out. She's heartbreaking and resilient; this woman should have been a star. If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium is a deeply enjoyable movie with a unique combination of humor and humanity that holds up remarkably well. --Bret Fetzer

TUESDAY, IT MUST BE BELGIUM September 6, 2008 I remember seeing this film in 1969. It is still funny. I used to travel a lot and had many of the same experiences as portrayed in this film. If you buy a copy of this DVD you will NOT be disappointed.
Did a similar trip. September 6, 2008 I really enjoyed the movie. It so reminded me of a similar tour through Europe in 1977 and again in 1983. Only my group was not adults but with high school students and I was the teacher. However, each time the students were wonderful and really appreciated what they learned and appreciated the U.S. even more.

There are two things about this film that made an impression on me when I first saw it in the movie theater during the late sixties: Suzanne Pleshette and fondues. I thought Suzanne Pleshette was breathtakingly beautiful. And fondues! I had never heard of fondues before seeing this film, and thought it was the coolest fun food ever. Needless to sat I've developed a love for fondues over the years(cheese, chocolate, et al), and continue to enjoy them as often as possible.
What I didn't remember about "Tuesday" is how entertaining it is, and how much nostalgia it brings back. Yes it's dated, but, then again, so am I -- so what! I enjoyed seeing Marty Ingalls, Peggy Cass, and Sandy Baron again, fixtures on T.V. many years ago. It may not be a critic's classic, but it is a movie I will watch over and over again.
As Good As I Remembered June 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I haven't seen this film shown on TV for several years and I'm always looking for it, so as soon as I found out it was being released on DVD, I ordered it immediately. Sometimes old, well-loved movies are a big disappointment when viewed years later - maybe they're associated with a happy time in one's life, or tastes may have changed - whatever the reason. Happily, I found this wasn't the case with "IITTMBB" because I enjoyed it as much as I ever did. When I was a teenager, I had the opportunity to go to Europe at approximately the same time period as this film was made, and my memories of Europe (and tours) are exactly as it depicts. My favorite scene is where Michael Constantine and a German tourist simultaneously re-enact the Battle of Bastogne according to their own memories - that's priceless. There are a lot of running gags: poor Irma and her fear of European toilet paper, with her long-suffering husband (Norman Fell) and the various misadventures that befall them; the man who steals anything not nailed down from his hotel rooms; Murray Hamilton and Peggy Cass and their rebellious daughter, Shelley - the list goes on. Suzanne Pleshette is lovely as the centerpiece of the movie, and a very young Ian McShane is adorable as the tour guide who sweeps her off her feet. Voiceovers and cameos are used a lot, and both add to the comedy and keep the movie from slowing down. I'm sure my affection for this film is enhanced by nostalgia, but all I can say is that I was not disappointed at all. This movie has a lot of endearing characters, gorgeous scenery, great clothes, funny situations, and an enjoyable look back at a time when the world was a lot more innocent. I highly recommend it.
Classic Gem, But Now Available on DVD! April 27, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This movie is a classic! It is very funny and nostalgic, but stands-up on its own merits also. This is the time when they made very funny and clean comedies that the whole family can enjoy! Unless you don't have a DVD player, and if you don't I suggest you get one for 29.99 or cheaper at Wal-Mart or any other store, this movie was recently released on DVD, so buy the DVD instead of some old worn VHS! The DVD is actually cheaper than the lowest VHS listed on AMAZON and is Brand New! I would especially not buy a VHS from any of those morons that think they can get 100 dollars or more for some old outdated VHS tape!If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium is the link to the DVD on AMAZON!
