HOCKNEY CREATES A JOYFUL SETTING November 1, 2008 A sparkling performance by a very talented group of singers and a first rate conductor. Creating just the right setting to light the spark was the scenery of the fine British-American (by dint of long residence) artist, David Hockney. Get comfortable before the television, press the start button on your remote and let yourself be carried along by the magic of Mozart, the Met cast and David Hockney
Charming Production October 9, 2008 For me, the beauty of this Met production was every aria Kathleen Battle participated in. I've read all the stories about her arrogance and general over-the-top "diva-ness", but she certainly has an amazing voice. I've not heard a better Pamina. She brought tears to my eyes.
Manfred Hemm's Papageno is wonderfully acted. He charms the audience and extracts maximum effect from the comedic portions of his part.
This is by far the finest "Flute" production I've seen and heard.
Superb music and excellent quality! April 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The recording is superb and the singers are great! I especially love Manfred Hemm's acting and singing. His humorous acting is well worth the money spent in this DVD. I love his green bird costume! It's hilarious. His voice is deep, moving and expressive.
The orchestration is also very well played and recorded. Other supporting singers are well chosen as well.
I would love to see this live with the same people!
Unbelievable!!! January 6, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
AMAZING. The SETS: excellent - schematic, evocative and inventive - you actually SEE Tamino and Pamina going through fire and water, for example. The CAST: extraordinary - a really funny Papageno, a wonderful Pamina (Kathleen Battle is utterly credible - which is saying a lot for a fantasy - I'd die for her at the drop of a hat!!!) and as for Kurt Moll, WOW! His is the first performance I've ever seen that squares with Bernard Shaw's opinion that if God listened to music, Sarastro's music is the music he'd listen to!!!! James Levine's conducting is superb, and his friendly, understated style just brings everything home. BUY THIS, and bless me for my advice!!!
Not perfect, but still very good November 9, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a huge classical music and Mozart fan, I'm giving this one four stars. Superb playing by James Levine and the Met orchestra, a dazzling Pamina played by Battle (who stands out the most IMO), great singing and acting by Papageno, and admirable stage production and direction ("Schnelle fusse" is wonderfully done). The Queen and Tamino aren't the greatest, but still good. Remember that opera is a massive work of art that requires the efforts of many people. It's really hard to get a "perfect" production with a "dream team" of the very best singers performing at their peak. Add to that that this is a live recording, and I'd say this is a hard-to-beat recording of Mozart's divine singspiel. Have seen only a couple of other "Flute" DVD's (although I've seen tons of "Don"'s), but this is probably a must-have for any Mozart opera fan.
