Description Einsturzende Neubauten was one of the key pioneers of industrial music. Known for their avant-garde methods, Einsturzende Neubauten have used jackhammers, drills, chainsaws, junk metal, tapes and amplified guitar noise and a multitude of found sounds over the past twenty years to make music. Much more than a spectacle of disaster and ruin, Neubauten's great and various noises eroticize de-sensitized and dead zones of contemporary life. Surprisingly, given their extraordinary visual spectacle, Liebeslieder is the first proper Einstuerzende Neubauten documentary. Commissioned by the German WDR TV's architecture division, it charts their beginnings in a hole beneath an Autobahn overpass in Berlin, where guiding spirit Blixa Bargeld and NU Unruh made music by hurtling themselves at its metal walls. It takes you through the early Untergang years, when they picked up momentum - and members FM Einheit, Alex Hacke and Mark Chung - through a seemingly perverse celebration of collapse and decline. Using interviews, concert material and often rare film footage, Liebeslieder plots their spreading influence around the world, their blitzes on moribund British and American music scenes, and their outings as teen idols in Tokyo. The documentary also highlights their theatre work with Peter Zadek, Heine Mueller, Japanese Butoh dancers, Erich Wonder and La La La Human Steps. On top of this Liebeslieder includes concert footage from their 1993 tour and, in full, their first ever music videos "Interim" and "Blume". After Einstuerzende Neubauten, everything else is silence

Essential Neubauten June 25, 2008 Any Einstuerzende Neubauten fan will want to own a copy of Liebeslieder. It includes plenty of concert footage spanning the first half of their career, as well as a smattering of clips from music videos, and the DVD menu allows you to jump directly to your favorite song. In between, there's just band members speaking--presumably in response to an interviewer, but we never see or hear the interviewer and there's no narration. E.N. is left to speak for itself. (The interview footage is in German, but subtitled in English.)
Liebeslieder might not suffice as an introduction to the band; but for those who (like me) know the band's recordings well but have never seen them live, the concert footage adds a great deal. E.N. doesn't just perform their songs, they create them anew.
Finally, the quality of the video, and especially the sound quality, is far better than I expected for recordings of this vintage. Highly recommended!
One of the best videos in my collection August 26, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I tried a long time ago to get into industrial music. Back when I thought that all industrial music sounded like Rammstein, VNV Nation, and Frontline Assebally I thought EN were a joke. Now that I have grown up I realise just how awesome they are. Personally I think the best way to get in to them is to watch this documentary. I mean there are some really good Cd's out their, but Neubauten is not a music group in the traditional sense. They are a experience. With this you get the whole package Live shows, music videos, documentary, archival footage, interviews, and of course lots of Blixa Bargeld. Buy this with Tabula Rosa, and Halber Mensch. Watch the video first, and than enjoy true avantgarde art.
