Album Description 6CD/6DVD Boxed set celebrating the 40th anniversary of this legendary band: All their Jim Morrison-Era studio albums reissued in deluxe 2-disc editions with rare & previously unreleased bonus material, 5.1 mixes, bonus video content, and more!
Amazon.com For years, the recording industry has asked fans to purchase the same music from the 1960s and '70s over and over again, via remasterings, repackagings, and, of course, reformattings. The Doors' box Perception (get it?), cleverly packaged as... a door, does hold some astonishing music, but the thing itself is a weird hybrid beast with multiple formats for every release. Each of the group's six albums has not only been re-remastered (this time by the remaining band members plus original engineer Bruce Botnick as the "40th anniversary mix"), but loaded up with a bevy of previously unreleased bonus tracks. But that's not it--for each album, there's a companion DVD, which includes a whole new 5.1 surround sound mix with more tracks, as well as the usual DVD extras, i.e., photo galleries, lyrics, and videos. That makes 12 discs, much of it essentially redundant. If you're cool with that, you're in for a treat. From the spookier, unissued version of "Indian Summer" to the entirely new tune "Push Push" and some super-rad footage of the band rehearsing L.A. Woman, it's easy to fall in love with this swirling, highly sexualized, and often brilliant band all over again. --Mike McGonigal

RHINO GETS IT RIGHT December 14, 2008 Rhino does an excellent job with their surround sound re-masters. Some of the earlier DVD Audio discs, including L A Woman by the Doors, are now collectibles and selling for well above their initial retail price, even when used. This box sex of 12 discs gives you 6 CDS and 6 DVDS. Anyone who has a DVD player will be able to use the DVD discs. They did it right, on the DVDs you get a new stereo master in advance resolution sound, plus a 5.1 DTS remaster which will play on any dvd player (or receiver) that has a DTS decoder, plus you get a 5.1 DVD Audio mix. The sound is very good, as expected, and the entire package is a great value. Each disc has bonus extras such as previously unreleased songs and videos (another great thing about the DVDs, you get picture and sound). Now if we can get Apple/Capitol to release the Beatles in a similar box, wow.
Not perfect, but pretty good December 5, 2008 For those who do not have a complete set of remastered Doors studio albums, this set is probably worth it if you find it at the right price (don't pay the full price). Packaging is creative, booklets are well written and the digipacks themselves are sturdy and well-designed. Two minor gripes, however: (a) the 5.1 surround mixes make much less use of the back channels than other relatively recent 5.1 releases, e,g., Queen "Night at the Opera", or anything from the 3 Genesis retrospective box sets - however, I do consider the source here; (b) it would have been nice if the set had included a live disc of some sort. That's it, otherwise - overall, I'd recommend this.
5.1 surround mix sucks November 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a Doors fan and I have bought all these albums at least 4 times before (LP, cassette, "regular" CD, then CD edition with bonus tracks) each, so the only reason why I bought this box set is the 5.1 surround sound mix. By any metric imaginable, these are definitely the worst 5.1 mixes I have ever encountered. Just about everything is dumped on the central channel; one can occasionally hear a guitar solo or keyboards on the surround channels, and that's about it. You might as well disconnect the subwoofer because no signal is sent to that channel. Save your money and wait for the next dvd-audio edition.
Great box set August 30, 2008 If you are a Doors fan/lover, then this box set will easily satisfy you. I do prefer some of their other versions to some songs, but most everything else was right on. It was worth the price, and Amazon did a great job on the gift wrap. It was a memorable birthday present for my girlfriend, and even better for me since she moved in. Now we share this great Doors collection.
Break on through........................................ April 12, 2008 If you are a Doors' fan then this is a new way of listening to them. Out takes and new versions of old favorites.
