Description In this delightfully funny animated adventure, "Olive, the Other Reindeer" is erally a kind-hearted dog who sets out to save Christmas when she hears that Blitzen is injured and Santa can't find a replacement! With the help of a smooth-talking penguin named Martini, Olive heads for the North Pole to join the flying reindeer team - but along the way, they must defeat an evil mailman who wants to end Christmas so he can carry less mail! With an all-star voice cast featuring Drew Barrymore, Ed Asner, Dan Castellaneta and Peter MacNicol, "Olive, the Other Reindeer" is sure to become a holiday tradition for young and old!
Amazon.com Simpsons creator Matt Groening helped create this delightful animated adaptation of the popular Christmas book. Originally shown on the Fox channel in 1999, Olive deals with a upstanding dreamer of a pooch (voiced expressively by Drew Barrymore) who hears Santa's angst when Blitzen breaks a leg just before the holiday, messing up Santa's delivery schedule. Olive hears Santa's quote about "all of the other reindeer" as "Olive, the other reindeer," and she is convinced she must go to the North Pole to help. Using equal parts traditional Christmas themes (unselfishness, the importance of being good instead of naughty) and Simpsons-esque humor (wordplay, contemporary cultural references), the 45-minute short is a refreshingly fun holiday pleaser. Purists may chafe at the action pieces and a scene in a rough 'n' tumble bar, but the filmmakers keep the spirit--and the unique look--of J. Otto Seibold's and Vivian Walsh's book. With some snappy songs (including one performed by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe) and great zingers (one reindeer calls Rudolph an urban legend), it's a fine holiday time for ages 5 and older. --Doug Thomas

The Other Olive January 6, 2009 I was so disappointed by this movie. We have the original book and we love it. When I saw that there was a movie version I was so excited. I was even more excited to see that Matt Groening was the EP. But when we actually watched it, my heart sank. The movie is nothing like the book. Other than Olive and the fact that she hears something on the radio and sets off to save Christmas, there's little similarity to the original book.
On it's own, the movie was OK. The humor is as you would expect from the creator of The Simpsons so if you are a fan of Groening, you will be amused. But if you are hoping for the animated version of your 2-year-old's favorite book, don't waste your money.
Worst Christmas cartoon ever! December 10, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
About 2/3 of the way into this movie, I finally gave up and turned it off. The only reason I watched that long was because the book is such a cute story, and I was holding out for a pleasant ending. Unfortunately, once the bar scene started, I realized that even if there was a pleasant ending, it couldn't possibly make up for all the garbage in between.
As other reviewers have stated, the content of this "children's" video is completely inappropriate for children! As a mother of young children and an elementary school teacher, I strongly urge you to choose something else for your little ones. I'm not sure why the writers felt that dirty magazines, a bar setting, and cruel behavior belong in a Christmas special.
Read and enjoy the book with your children. And if you want to watch a Christmas special together, go with one of the tried and true classics like Rudolph, Frosty, or the Year Without a Santa Claus. Olive the Other Reindeer is completely unenjoyable, and a total disappointment.
Addictive to Kids (a good thing) June 9, 2008 This is a great holiday show for the kids (probably 4 and up). Funny characters and Drew Barrymore shows some unseen talent. The songs are catchy and the animation is incredible, especially for us Simpson fans.
