Continuing a great tradition.... August 25, 2008 SubZero was a good end to the original Batman: The Animated Series. It's like watching a long episode. Mask of the Phantasm is just one of the best comic book cartoon movies ever. One thing that I always liked about the 90's DC Animated Universe is that it really wasn't just for kids. They made it more accessible to adults. Both of these probably shouldn't be watched with very young kids alone. Get these for your collection if you like DC Animated.
Great movies, insulting DVD releases and mislabled amazon entry as Widescreen July 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Others have reviewed these 2 excellent films, this is focused on the DVD product here. No remastering, horrible PLII sound (no 5.1) and the complete slap in the face of a 4x3 cropped "fullscreen" version of Phamtasm. Not to mention the amazon listing shows both 4x3 and "widescreen" this is flat out false information. The menu for Mask shows in widescreen, as soon as you play the movie, it shifts to 4x3 and even has the dreaded "Has been formatted to fit your TV" insult. Umm my tv is 720p 16x9. This cropped DVD has *not* been formatted to fit "my screen" it was formatted to fit portable DVD players for kids on airplanes, the mistaken target audience.
The true target audience is adults who enjoy a darker batman instead of the chawrrible flaming camp of the Schuemacher films.
In short this disc was a mistake purchase, I assumed I was getting a 16x9 anamorphic Mask movie and a native 4x3 Freeze movie.
Also beware this is a double sided disc, on print art on the disc. It's almost as if they are encouraging people to pirate the movie instead as this release was straight up robbery.
If you already have the movies, don't bother March 28, 2008 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
In 1992, Batman - The Animated Series hit the airwaves. Riding in on the success of the two Tim Burton-directed feature films, the series won over a large audience, with its fantastic artwork and storytelling style that stayed true to the character's roots - many will argue that these cartoons were superior to the Joel Schumacher-directed feature films! And with the success, Warner Bros. released a theatrical animated movie, as well as a direct-to-video sequel a few years later. ***
Mask of the Phantasm was the theatrically-released animated film. This movie follows a mysterious murder of a mobster, for which Batman is accused. Meanwhile, as Bruce Wayne, he reacquaints with an old love interest, as long-time nemesis The Joker sets forth his own plans to finish off the Dark Knight. *** Phantasm did poorly in theaters and received mixed reviews. However it did get a "two thumbs up" rating from Siskel and Ebert, and has always maintained a cult following. With its intriguing story that stays true to the early, darker storytelling of the comic, it's the superior of the two films included here. ***
Sub-Zero was a direct-to-video release. Following up on the theatrical release of Batman and Robin, Mr Freeze appears here as the central villain. Mr. Freeze kidnaps Commissioner Gordon's daughter, in an effort to get a blood transfusion for his ailing wife. So the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder set off to rescue her from the villain. ***
Sub-Zero isn't a great movie, but it IS superior to the theatrically-released Batman and Robin. The story here is more straightforward and predictable, but overall the whole thing still manages to entertain. It doesn't top Phantasm, though. ***
As both of these films have had earlier DVD releases, it really wasn't necessary for Warner Bros. to do a reissue - especially considering these DVDs have no remastered image or worthwhile bonus material (see the below paragraphs for more details.) With the theatrically-released sequel to Batman Begins coming out later this year, it was probably just intended as a cash-in to ride on that craze. It's NOT necessary to buy this package if you already own these movies, but it's a good value if you're a Batman fan who hasn't gotten them on DVD yet. ---
Image And Sound:
From what I can tell, this set got no remastering treatment whatsoever. Mask of the Phantasm not only has a good deal of blemishes in the picture quality, it's also presented in a cropped fullscreen aspect ratio. WHY!? Earlier sold-separately DVD releases featured the original widescreen, so why does this twofer insist on going with a cropped version? Sub-Zero fares slightly better, the image is very good throughout aside from some mild issues here and there. As Sub-Zero was initially a direct-to-video release, fullscreen IS the original aspect ratio, so no cropping issues there. The audio on both presentations is fine, I didn't notice any major flaws to speak of. ---
Special Features:
Another department in which this DVD falls flat. Phantasm gets no bonus features, while Sub-Zero gets a few modest ones, including a weak DVD game, artwork featurette, and a "how to draw" featurette. None of this stuff is very interesting - why no commentary or cast and crew interviews?
Final Words:
I was hoping for more than a "slapped together" package, as both of these movies are highly entertaining for any fan of the Dark Knight - and it's disappointing to see them not get "special edition" treatment. If you already own these movies on DVD, there's no reason to buy this, but if you don't, it's a good deal for the two movies.
One great film (MOTP) and one good film (Subzero) together on one disc... March 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I was growing up back in 1992 I was a big fan of Batman: The Animated Series and I still am. So needless to say when I saw Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in theaters I loved it and I thought it was better than Tim Burton's rendition of Batman.
When I saw Subzero for the first time I thought it paled in comparison to Mask of the Phantasm but I thought it was still enjoyable because it was kind of a companion piece to Batman & Robin...and Subzero was actually better than Batman & Robin.
I think bundling Mask of the Phantasm and Subzero together is great a idea but I just wish the WB had done this sooner. I'm not upset about the WB leaving Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman out of the bundle because quite frankly I never liked Mystery of the Batwoman in the first place.

While initially thought to be a two-disc release of the previous releases for the films, Warner Home Video has pressed a whole new flipper disc for this DVD release, putting SubZero on one side and Mask of the Phantasm on the other (featuring the films fullscreen transfer). Also confusing is the DVDs packaging that puts SubZero before Mask of the Phantasm in nearly every respect.
The two sides of the discs are complete duplicates of the original releases and contain nothing new. Exact same menus and exact same video transfers. They could've taken the time to hunt down that 5.1 surround track for SubZero that was released on LaserDisc and tossed it on here, but that's not what this release was meant for. A quick cash in on the ever growing popularity of one of comic books most famous heroes. Here's hoping we'll see a more worthy release for Mask of the Phantasm come it's twentieth anniversary.
For those that don't already own these two films, it's a cheap alternative to buying two different DVD releases, but for those that already have these two releases it's a definite downgrade. Not only do you have to still deal with a flipper disc, you lose the widescreen transfer of Mask of the Phantasm. Not a huge loss considering the film was animated in fullscreen, but still. This is really just a cash cow release that, one can hope, was just released to check the interest in these two films to see if future special editions are warranted. Let's all hope for a Phantasm special edition to coincide with The Dark Knight DVD release, shall we?
