Great CD that fills a gap in Zappa's discography December 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Some of the releases of Zappa's material since FZ's death have been disappointing, and few are really indispensable. This, on the other hand, is a very worthy addition to any Zappa fan's collection.
This is the "Petit Wazoo" band that did a brief tour in late 1972. This is an important addition to the catalog, because this is the first real release from that band. (A previous release consisted of rehearsals from 1972). It's interesting that this period is not represented AT ALL in the 6 double-CD series "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" (perhaps 1 song!)
It's basically a smaller version of the band that recorded "Waka Jawaka" and "Grand Wazoo". It features a horn section of top LA area jazz musicians. Most notably Bill Watrous on trombone is featured on a couple of great solos. Zappa's guitar work is excellent throughout, his style starting to resemble his mid-70's sound.
Several of the tunes are bluesy jams. The CD also features several compositions that were new at the time, various parts of which appeared in different form on "Greggary Peccary", "Bebop Tango", "Cucamonga", etc. True Zappa freaks will appreciate the "conceptual continuity" clues.

P.S. in late 2007 "Zappa Wazoo" was released, which features a concert by the full Grand Wazoo big band from 1972. As of Dec. 2008 Amazon is not selling that item. The official Zappa website has it. Seek that one out, because it is great! Get both!
Salud for ever. desde sudamerica ( CHILE ).
Zappa the way you like it! June 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For every hardcore Zappa fan, the fan that really knows he was without peer on the guitar, this album is what you've been looking for. DC Boogie is thirteen minutes of pure Zappa guitar bliss and well worth the price paid for the album. You will not be disappointed, Frank at his live performance best with superlative engineering and sound. Inspirational liner notes from none other than the master Steve Vai. Glad I bought it!
P.S. I sure miss Frank Zappa.
Another glowing review May 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here, as many others have already dissected the album in detail. Bottom line: If you appreciate Frank's instrumental music (a la Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Guitar, etc.) at all, BUY THIS ALBUM, you will not be disappointed. This disc has spent a lot more time in my player than any other CD since I bought it...occasionally I will dim the lights, crank up the volume, and treat myself to a FZ concert. Awesome.
Top form Frank February 27, 2008 I enjoy the inventiveness of Frank's instrumental works more so than many of his other stylistic skewerings. From what I know about this disc, this is the Petit Wazoo that also recorded The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka. Both of these classic albums have the dirty, funky, and truly Frank instrumentals that are indicative of this period. Much of this dirt/funk is reminiscent of Apostrophe (') in style and texture. This is the Zappa that is most intriguing to me...that down and dirty blues.
