  Excellent !!! December 15, 2008 I loved this movie!
Show your support of the making of good movies that support virtue. Buy a NEW DVD to encourage Hollywood to produce more Christian movies. Buying a NEW DVD is like voting for more good Christian movies. I hope and pray that they will produce other movies from the Bible, like Daniel, and Jonah ECT..
From the Bible John 3:16 = For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
God bless you
A biblical story November 22, 2008 The Story of Ruth, with a cast including Stuart Whitman, Tom Tryon, Peggy Wood, and Viveca Lindfors is an excellent film if you want to learn more about biblical stories. This film develops during the times when due to famine in Bethlehem, a family is forced to move to Moab, a nearby country where the people do not hold the same beliefs and idolatrize a man made god.
The family is formed by Elimelech, his wife Naomi and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion; who upon arrival at Moab, open a small business working as artisans for the ruling class. While they are Jews, both sons end up marrying Moabite women: Chilion marries Orpah and Mahlon marries Ruth.
As a child, Ruth was exchanged for money by poor parents who were struggling to survive hard times. The Moab priest takes Ruth in and brings her up as a candidate to priestess. Ruth is then selected as a child to be sacrificed to the Moab god, but she develops a rash at the moment of selection, which strangely enough, disappears once her life is spared.
Is it an omen?
Has some power beyond her understanding protected her life?
Does she have a special purpose?
She meets Mahlon when he is involved in the design and production of the crown of a child about to be immolated. Mahlon is taken by Ruth beauty and he begins to share his beliefs, specifically that life is too precious to be sacrificed to a god, made out of stone, that needed repair and he was chosen to do the job.
If a god is just a figure that we can actually touch, breaks and we need to repair, what kind of God is that?
He then tells Ruth that the belief of his people is that God is all mighty, that he is invisible, that he created and protects all life, that he is all merciful and would never accept the punishment of sacrifice, letting a young life come to an end so others can prosper.
Ruth begins to question the teachings she has received in preparation for total purification as a priestess of the Moabs and she even learns the ten commandments, given to her in a carved stone that Mahlon has worked on as a gift of love.
When she questions the priest that took her in, and cries out to stop the sacrifice of the child, the soldiers go to the house of Naomi and kill her husband and ultimately, her two sons.
Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem and Ruth, now married to Mahlon, feels she must follow and support her mother in law's decision. A tender moment takes place and we hear the words of Ruth who tells her mother in law that she shall follow and go wherever Naomi chooses to travel to. She then says: "your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God!"
The two women return to Bethlehem and here is where the plot evolves to explain to us the great importance of Ruth in biblical terms. Without a doubt, this film is very well acted and a pleasure to watch. If you want to learn more about biblical stories, don't miss it!
SO disappointed October 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was so disappointed in this movie. I purchased it to supplement our biblical history home school curriculum. There is very little factual information in this movie. Every character and the timeline are misrepresented. The beauty of Boaz as a picture of Christ is totally lost because of the unbiblical way he initially treats Ruth in this film. Orpha's role is completely wrong and the "closer kinsman" couldn't be any further away from accurate.
Please, if you are looking for a screen version of the beautiful book of Ruth, don't waste your money here. I'm so sorry I allowed my daugther to see this movie.
My all time favorite movie! July 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Years ago I happened to see this movie on TV and was deeply touched by it. Years later in great happiness I was able to acquire a video.
I watch it when I need a spiritual boost. I think all the actors/actresses did a beautiful job. As stated above in other reviews, it does take a lot of liberties Scripturally for romance sake, but the spiritual overtones in this movie, in my opinion, completely make up for it. Elana Eden is wonderful, as well as all the male actors, and I think I have the story/movie memorized at this point, BUT I believe Peggy Wood captures my attention in many ways. While I don't know much about any of these actors, Peggy Wood plays such a spiritual role that I am hard pressed to think of other movies that match that in any other movie that I have seen in-- what she did for this movie. I so wish that other movies had that quality/level of spirituality. Together Peggy Wood and Elana Eden portray very spiritual women that is much to be admired. Elana Eden plays such a courage woman that her role is much to be admired in this movie. Again, I think it is the best movie that has ever been made. I am so thankful I have this movie in my life. It does something deeply for me. God bless you all in Jesus' Name.
Dramatic movie, but NOT the story of Ruth! July 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this movie along with two sets of biblical movies for the benefit of my husband. He said he would be more interested in learning about the Bible if he could visualize it and I thought this would be the perfect way. I realize that any movie will take "artistic liberties" to make the story flow along, however, this was a total remake. The only thing true to the Bible account are the names of the characters. I have been watching all the movies with Bible in hand to make sure to point out the differences between what was actually scriptural and what was not... I finally gave up and we just watched it as an interesting movie. I personally am sorry that I added this one to our collection.
