It's all worth it for... November 7, 2008 their live performance of "A Question of Time". In fact, if I'm skipping around, it's the first song I turn to on the set list. The original version is genuine synth-pop, complete with experimental firecrackers being sampled and computerized keyboards...80's all the way, yet ahead of its time then. Seeing AQOT live on this concert dvd shows that they're way past innocence- Martin's fierce guitar playing adds the kind of edge to this song you just don't expect. Add to that the presence of a shirtless Dave in all his tattooed glory. I always thought the song stood out, but wow...and Dave looks amazing and he really gets the crowd going. And yes- he spins!
I will admit that in the beginning I had trouble watching the DVD all the way through because of the jumpy camera effects and full drenched-on color...the most prominent example of which was for "The Sinner in Me". If you're prone to seizures, I'll warn you now to stay away. But as time wore on, it grew on me, and Dave's signature moves are actually enhanced by the editing. A lot of it is repetitive...in "Everything Counts" the editing just rocks. Overall, I think their often emotional live performance mix well with these modern, often showy effects.
It's certainly not like One Night in Paris...they don't exhibit the same kind of exhuberance as they did in 2001. I do miss my favorite song "Halo" and I believe "Never Let Me Down Again" and "I Feel You" were more intense here than in Touring the Angel. However, trust me, there are definately trade-offs.
You can't help but notice that Dave's not as fresh-faced as he used to be, but so what? People do get older. In all honesty I think his facial expressions and general roughness are more bad boy than pretty boy. If you prefer the latter, might I suggest Depeche Mode:101. Besides, his body makes up for everything. Case in point, "World in my eyes" is basically a homage to his well-toned physique. It's actually kind of comical. I do love how the audience gets spliced into the footage with expressions of pure joy and...devotion on their faces. Dave and Martin's relationship onstage is like watching magic unfold. They know each other so well and you can feel them feeding off of each other.
Another selling point for this DVD is the sheer variety of DM territory they cover. Early favorites to their latest hits...their progression from pop band to hard-edged electro-rockers makes them truly legends of music.
So should you buy this? Yes!!! And you should also buy One Night in Paris if you haven't already. They are each standouts on their own, but both works of art in their own right. Corbin
I'm 27 and didn't really get into them until the mid-90's. If this doesn't make you a devotee, I don't know what will.
if you are a fan you cant go wrong March 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
ok first off, be prepared... martin l. gore is getting old, and starting to look it. heart breaking.
second thing...well they edited it to look a bit like a music video, at first it fealt too over produced to me, but now i hardly notice.
a must buy for DM fans
Great DVD of an Awesome Concert May 8, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Both the Audio and Video quality of this DVD is very good. I saw this tour twice (once at The Joint @ The Hardrock Hotel Las Vegas and the second time in the parking lot of the Hardrock a few months later). This DVD brings the concert back home and even allowed me to see certain visuals unseen live.
As for whether or not to get this or the 3 disc version... my thoughts are as follows: Both editions have the 122 minute concert in it's entirety. I don't need a behind the scenes documentary and the CD that comes with the other edition is a waste of time and money. I simply ripped the entire concert into AIFF format and converted to mp3 for use on my iPod. Why have a CD with 7 songs when you can make your own live soundtrack with them all.
Only bad thing is that I did not see them in person..... January 15, 2007 This is one of the best concert videos I have ever seen. My sister saw the show in San Antonio and she raved about the whole show....so since I could not make it to one myself, this is the next best thing. They also perform a lot of early songs and the entire set list does not disappoint. The outfit worn by Gore is awesome and Dave is as good as ever. I cannot say it enough, if you like or love Depeche Mode...this is a must buy!!!!
