Every action movie has a moment so over the top you have to laugh; Shoot 'Em Up consists of nothing but these moments. A carrot-eating, lone wolf kind of guy named Smith (Clive Owen, Children of Men, Inside Man) steps in to protect a pregnant woman from a gunman--and finds himself, with the aid of a lactating prostitute (Monica Belluci, The Matrix Revisited), defending the newborn child from a sleazy contract killer Mr. Hertz (Paul Giamatti, American Splendor, Sideways) and his army of thugs. That's pretty much the plot, but story is beside the point. Writer/director Michael Davis (Monster Man) has a keen sense of what matters in an action movie. The rapid-fire editing is scrupulously coherent; you always grasp what happened in every shoot-out, even if it flagrantly violates the laws of physics or basic plausibility. Explaining how Smith survives a four-story fall--even if that explanation is beyond ridiculous--demonstrates both a sense of wit and a winking respect for the audience's imagination. As a result, Shoot 'Em Up is ten times more entertaining than the likes of Transformers or Rush Hour 3, movies so self-satisfied with special effects or movie stars that they forgot to be fun. (Shoot 'Em Up's only weakness is a sliver of misogyny, the one action movie cliche that it's not clever enough to transcend.) --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Fun. Ridiculous Political Commentary.   December 25, 2008
This movie was as absurd as I expected it to be. I knew the plot would be silly, and that the action would be implausible. All of this was OK by me, and for the most part this film delivered. I liked it.

Strangely, the film-makers opted to make a stand on the issue of GUN CONTROL. They like gun control...A LOT. Even though the hero mows down legions of baddies with his trusty pistols (and vegetables), he too is staunchly pro-GUN CONTROL. I won't give the story away, but he performs an act in the film with the express purpose of ensuring that strong gun control measures will be enacted.

Film-makers: Just make the silly movie. No need to preach to your audience. Subtracted one star for the political content.

1 out of 5 stars is not in stock   December 17, 2008
Unfortunately Amazon is saying this is in stock (as with many other products on the website) -- yet days later you receive a later apologizing for the delay. Be aware of this if you are buying for Xmas

5 out of 5 stars Milk does a body good!   December 9, 2008
I love this mindless actioner.
High octane action, clever character writing and an attractive cast keeps you mind off of how little a plot there is but...with this one...it doesn't matter

5 out of 5 stars funny stuff!   December 8, 2008

4 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book (and Movie) Blog   December 5, 2008
This was a seriously stupid movie and yes, I loved it. It's a total guy flick. The actors Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci, Stephen McHattie, and Greg Bryk are fantastic. The story is where it all falls apart.

Smith, played by Clive Owen, steps in to protect a pregnant woman from a gunman. The woman gets in the cross fire and Smith is left with a baby. For some reason, there isn't access to bottles or formula and he must find a wet nurse. No, the setting wasn't in the horse and buggy era.

He finds a lactating prostitute, played by Monica Belluci, and both are now the target of some psycho hitman. In order to stop being hunted, he must find out why.
