"One man can make a difference," intones a dying millionaire--well, one man and a superduper car, backed with millions of dollars! Welcome to the deliciously ridiculous world of Knight Rider, the early '80s TV series that launched the career of David Hasselhoff and his magnificent coif (both later seen in the insanely popular Baywatch). After being shot in the face, detective Michael Long is revived as Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and partnered with an indestructible talking car called K.I.T.T. (voiced by William Daniels). The duo travel around the country solving crimes--basically, it's The Lone Ranger with the car as Silver and Tonto combined. Supported by finicky British executive Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare) and sexy engineer Bonnie Barstow (Patricia McPherson), Knight and K.I.T.T. take on everything from motorcycle gangs to corporate crooks to K.I.T.T.'s own evil twin, K.A.R.R.

Like any good cheese, Knight Rider has only grown more pungent with age. Decked out in alarming '80s fashions (check out that blue Members Only jacket in the pilot), earnestly spouting some of the worst dialogue in the history of television, the absurdly handsome Hasselhoff radiates the unique charisma that's made him a Teutonic cult figure. In addition to the 21 episodes of the first season, Knight Rider: Season One includes a 1991 TV movie, Knight Rider 2000, that tried to launch a revamped series set in the near future (lacking the cheerful touch of creator Glen Larson, the attempt sank into oblivion) and brief interview footage (including Hasselhoff describing when he read the original script: "It was glowing in my hands. This was gold.") It's unlikely this boxed set will appeal to anyone who didn't become a fan of the show at an impressionable age, but for those fans, Knight Rider: Season One is gold. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Big Bang for your money   June 8, 2008

I never watched the show during its original run. My wife watched it and turned me on to it. We purchased the second season first (good) and I decided to start off at the beginning. This particular collection is good, as it sets the stage, explaining who Michael Knight is, what the "Foundation" is, where that ominous voice comes from during the opening credits, etc. As an extra bonus, this collection includes the entire "Knight Rider 2000: The Movie Sequel." While I enjoyed it, nothing beats the original t-top. A must purchase for fans of the show.

3 out of 5 stars Are these things half-burned or something?   April 21, 2008

I own every season. It is great to own a piece of my childhood again. The problem? Every season has at least one "problem disc" that has trouble playing (if it plays at all) in whatever DVD Player I put it in, even my computer.

5 out of 5 stars Knight Rider is still a classic after all these years!   March 25, 2008

I recently puchased Knight Rider Season 1 and was amazed at the quality of the show. The storyline of "One Man Making a Difference" was an excellent concept. Knight Rider showed a man named Michael Knight who was sent on James Bond-style missions to protect the less fortunate and uphold the law. His car is a 1984 talking Trans-Am with its own personality. Their bond and kinship is very real and can be felt by the audience. This was a very well done season to establish the characters and their identities. If you want to see one of the best shows of the 1980's, then I highly recommend this DVD box set.

This is the best television program ever created. Season one is packed with extras too. This buy is a no brainer for anyone who liked this series back in the day. Don't bother paying the mortgage this month, just buy this...
