Excellent March 23, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I recently viewed this via Netflix. Netflix has many of these videos with Karajan conducting, either the Vienna Phil or the Berlin Phil. Some are concerts, some are New Years Eve concerts, some (the Beethoven Symphonies) are more of a studio feel than live even though they are filmed in the concert hall. The sound is very good and the camera does better than on some of the videos that mostly give close ups of Karajan and close up pans of different players.
My only complaint with the series is that most of the videos run 48 minutes to a hour. This is more CD or LP length than DVD. So, if more video was put on the DVD it would be a better value. But, I am a Karajan fan and love the orchestras as well so it is better to have what we have than to not have them.
One of my favorites in the series is the Evgeny Kissin New Years Eve (Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto)when he was only a very young looking 17 year old.
Bravisimo!! October 24, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is fantastic. Such talent. The composer, the pianist, the conductor and orchestra. All fantastic.
Great Performances from the French Repertoire February 20, 2001 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
This DVD captures concert performances from the mid-80s of La Mer, Afternoon of a Faun, and the 2nd Suite from Daphne and Chloe. These are wonderfully sensual pieces that von Karajan had recorded several times before and the DVD really captures some great performances. Karajan really draws out the beauty of these pieces and the sound is excellent and is of CD quality. The photography is quite good and does not, like some DVDs in this collection really focus on the conductor -- rather it shifts to the individual instruments that of the greatest interest at a given momemnt in a piece (e.g., the flute in Faun). If you like these pieces, this is definitely a DVD to own..
