Enablers, Inc. September 6, 2008 Okay. The concert's not bad, if you don't mind unintelligible English, even when Ms. Winehouse is talking, not singing. If ever a video cried out for subtitles, its this one. The documentary has them, but the concert does not. And, yes, as "Back to Black" proved, Winehouse is a British blue-eyed soul talent in the mold of - if not necessarily the level of - a Dusty Springfield. She has talent and promise. But, she is pathetically out of control in the concert, drunk and drunker throughout the evening, and possibly, stoned as well. I don't want to seem holier-than-thou, but when I see teens singing "No, No, No" to rehab to a person clearly in need of just that - when I see that it was actually her enabling cab driver Dad who inspired that refrain, when I see the music industry types, featured in the doc, who apparently only care about wnat the singer can do for the label.... well, it's off-putting to say the least. So, talent aside, it's just too painful to watch someone self-destruct before one's eyes. If this concert existed in a vacuum, I'd give it 5 stars. But it doesn't. So, a somewhat generous 3 stars for a disquieting disc that will remain in my seldom played collection. I hope Amy Winehouse comes out of this phase, and fulfills her talent in the future.
amy Winehouse rocks! August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is an amazing concert- yes, she is trouble, but oh so talented. I saw this concert on Lufthansa in first class on my last month trip and loved it- even at 51 years old, I still like this music genre and I hope she cleans her act up and releases many more great CDs
Wow July 22, 2008 I fell in love with Amy at the Mandela concert in June 2008. Had only heard she won several Emmys, never seen her, was unaware of a single title. But she blew me away with her sheer presence. I was pretty close to the stage, but I rate her presence up with some all stars - Santana, Jethro Tull, Bowie, Hendrix and JFK - does that really date me! She is a great singer. Period. The range of music in her live concert is simply fabulous. The band behind her is equally fabulous and that is her musician recommendation. My recommendation is that I have watched her concert every night for the last 4 nights and I have only owned the DVD that long. I haven't seen the DVD to the end. Oh my and she likes Thelonious Monk - so do I. But I am caught up in the fears surrounding her well being - if there were anything I could do to help her I surely would - she is such a plus to our world. Would love to meet her - she exudes.
Wonderful Winehouse July 20, 2008 Amy can belt 'em out, as well as just belt 'em. This is the best of her CD's, as far as I'm concerned. Love it and her. What a voice!
Vendor was great in getting the product to me on time and in good condition, as promised. Would highly recommend both artist and vendor.
Winehouse video June 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I enjoyed the type of music - a fresh take on classic jazz, motown, and ska. The band is outstanding, full of energy and fun to watch. Amy's voice is very natural although it is true that as the performance goes on, she appears a bit inebriated. However, for me, this factor did not ruin the musical message. I enjoyed seeing the documentary about how Amy became famous and the history behind some of the songs. I'm impressed with how down to earth she can be off the stage. Overall, this is a great video to sit down and relax with - it is also perfect for having on in the background at a party to liven things up. It's colorful, artsy, unique, and not disturbingly loud or obnoxious.
